  • I have the loan that replaced this one from Nationwide in 2001 and they can find scanned copies of the relevant documents believe it or not.

I expect that in some organisations, the keeping or destruction of archives is discussed in relation to PPI.
I know that it was when I worked for a bank (large American bank), when Robert Maxwell fell off his boat, the word went out across the office to keep everything regarding his funds that were marked for destruction.

Firms risk massive fines for deliberately destroying data to avoid PPI complaints (see the fines thrown at Clydesdale just for pretending they didn't have it).

Your account was closed in ~2001, it's not realistic for them to keep the data for 17 years in case you wanted to complain later. Remember the PPI miss-selling scandal really took off in 2011 when the banks decided not to challenge the court case so it could well be the case they deleted the records in 2007-2010, it could be that they do somewhere in an old archive.

You could always send them a SAR for a copy of all your data that they hold if you don't believe them

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
