20 year old disabled student

Hi,
Currently in receipt of CTC for my 19 year old disabled son (gets enhanced mobility and care for PIP) when he turns 20 these will stop. He is in full time non advanced education on 3 year course.
I have read various things regarding Universal Credit and students and the LCW part. One of the things stated people in same situation are claiming new style ESA ( even though they won’t qualify ) as this starts the ball rolling for the LCW quicker .
We are in full UC area .
Any ideas of the best course of action.
TIA

    I would contact:

New style ESA is based on NI contributions in the last two tax years, so unlikely your son would be eligible.

  • Thanks.
    Spoke to them today
Their advice is to claim new style esa contributory based ( which he won’t qualify for but will have to give him a WCA)
Claim UC the day after and ask them to hold it pending outcome of WCA.
After That then UC should be in payment from date of claim.
If he only applied for only UC he would not qualify like he would have done with ESA in the past.!

As Alice says please let us know if that works. I would expect DWP to check NI record first and then decline the claim prior to WCA progressing but would like to be proved wrong.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
