I'd like to let my house but 'keep' a room for my stuff

  • We were advised not to allow tenants the use of our loft, for liability purposes if they ever fell through it (the agent did start quoting something in recent estate-agent professional magazines about a 2 year old claim when a viewer fell through the ceiling whilst looking in the loft...). I've never looked into it, our loft is empty. The same letting agent also advised us to get rid of our greenhouse because of the liability issue.

As a student, our landlord kept a room for themselves (they lived in the property 3 months of the year). We frequently "broke in", because the extra space we could use made good drying space. Hindsight says that may well have not been great for the LL stuff, and I wouldn't be happy leaving my things for someone to do the same to.
  • I would love to know if the house then becomes a dwelling plus a storage facility.
