Makewarm Problem
Hi - I just wonder if someone can advise, last year my parents bought a new boiler from a company called makewarm (they have since stopped trading), the boiler/wiring is faulty and they are now planning on shelling out hundreds of pounds to have it fixed - do they have any come back at all considering the boiler is less than 12 months old & the whole job should have been guaranteed - I presume they don't but thought I would ask....they also paid (they thought) for the whole system to be flushed out but British Gas have told them this was never done so they also have to pay £600 - £800 to have this done as well!!

I feel for your parents. If you have proof that Makewarm took money for a system flush that was never provided then that might be seen as fraud. If I was you, I would be having a chat with Trading Standards. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
If Makewarm have gone bust then there's not much you can do.
Having said that, did they pay any of the cost by credit card? If so then they should do a S.75 claim to the card company.
Also, get a good local engineer to have a look and do a quote for both fixing the problems and doing a system flush - the price you quote just for a flush seems high.0 -
Thanks for the reply - I am not sure how they paid to be honest - I will check with them. I think they may have used savings. I have suggested another engineer but both are elderly and just want heating to work now, neither are in the best of health and this is causing them stress - to make matters worse this company was recommended by Age Concern - that's why they used them!0

so it appears they took out interest free finance for the boiler which they are still paying - I have asked them to make contact with the credit company and find out if anything can be done0

If the finance was directly connected to the boiler then the finance company could be held liable for any defects. It may be worth them taking any paperwork they have to citizens advice for help.
One problem they have is BG's answer to everything is £800 for a power flush before they even try to find out what is actually wrong whether it actually needs doing or not.0 -
Thank you we will contact the finance company & I have actually put a post on our local facebook group to see if anyone can recommend a heating engineer that can also do rewiring as needed0

Surely the boiler itself has a warranty if it's less than 12 months old? Was the boiler warranty registered with the manufacturer at the time of install?0
-
So apparently it was 2 years ago it was fitted and yes it does have a warranty but the company that fitted it appear to have done the wiring incorrectly - it seems that they fitted a combi boiler but the heating will only work if the hot water is on (no I don't understand that on a combi either) but it then means that because they have to have overridden the hot water to get the heating on the hot water is so hot that you can't touch it, we have managed to get the credit companies details & I have left them to call them to see what they say - if they refuse to help then we shall go down the CAB route and see what other advice we can get. It doesn't help that they also had a service plan with Corgi but they didn't do the routine service because when they took it out the boiler had just been fitted - it's all a it of a mess really....0
