Esure - trackers and changes to policies

My Dad has been insured with Esure for a while but his policy is up for renewal now and he's changing because he says in the T&Cs they have changed the policy on cover for contents of the vehicle and that cars are no longer covered unless they have a tracker installed in their car.

Has anyone noticed this on their recent renewals? I am with Esure but my policy isn't up until next February so I am presuming it only covers renewals not current policies. I've had nothing from them.

I've tried Googling it but nothing has been flagged up.

Thanks. :)

Mine is not due for renewal until June. But if that is the case irrespective of price I will be going elsewhere.

I was with Esure about 3 years ago. Seemed okay.

It appears that this rule only covers theft only. Fault Crash? You're covered. Non-Fault Crash? You're covered. Vehicle Break-In? You're covered. Windscreen Claim? You're covered.

The only situation in-which you aren't covered is if someone actively attempts to steal your car. Does that even happen these days? Cars are notoriously difficult to hotwire these days, so I suspect they're simply trying to encourage people to be a bit more responsible with their car keys. The amount of people I know who do things like leave their car keys in a bowl by the front door, so anyone with a small hand or coat hanger can steal them. Mind boggling really.

It's a risky thing to take a chance on though. If someone nicks your car you're basically not covered and that's a big risk unless you have the money to replace your car. I'll be studying the T&Cs on mine when the renewal is up in February to see if it's the case.

Plus the link attached above by another respondee quotes the following:

Update: E16/06 Title: Endorsements which may apply to your policy
We have added a new policy endorsement. If this is applicable to you, it will be shown in your policy schedule under the section 'Endorsement in the Policy Booklet that apply':
    13. We will not cover loss of or damage to your car or its contents under section 3 of the policy booklet (theft or attempted theft) unless a tracking device is fitted to your car. This tracking device must be in full working order at all times, and active with a current network subscription or air time contract.

Of course, this won't always be the case with all policies and you need to read your policy documentation carefully. I don't usually study it that carefully but I will this time. The link is definitely worth a read so you know what to look for.

Im reading this that to be aimed at those who have a trackers that's installed and declared to Esure already and not to those who don't have a tracker.

Incorrect. It specifically says in your bolding that they will not cover loss or damage unless a tracker is fitted.

If you look at your renewal schedule (not your certificate) it clearly states what endorsements apply- in my case it says "none" it would say 13 if the tracker was required.

It is most likely as casseus says, only for people who have negotiated a discount, or even got cover at all, because they claim to have a tracker fitted.

    WRONG!

Section 3 of the policy booket states:
Loss or damage if any approved security or tracking device, which we have asked to be fitted as a condition of issuing this insurance policy and which you have told us is, or will be, fitted to your vehicle has not been set or is not in full working order, or if the network subscription for the maintenance or air time contract of any tracking device is not current at the time of loss.

    • Loss or damage, if the theft or attempted theft has not been reported to the police and has not been assigned a crime reference number.

The above in bold Italic underline is the section the new title endorsement is needed updating, It makes sense when you put them both together
