Car Insurance Experiment - What do insurers take into account?

Hi all,
I've recently been looking to take car insurance for a lease vehicle (private use). It was extortionate! Long story short, I then decided to do a quick search on insurance for my own vehicle - it's waaayyyy more than I paid last year.
So now I'm worried. My partner and I have clear licenses, driving same about of time with same amount of NCB and using the same address. For the same vehicle, she is getting insurance over £300 cheaper, in some instances I was being quote £1000 and she was being quoted £415.
The insurers and brokers use the excuse "it's a high risk vehicle" (for a Ford Kuga!) yet when asking why my partner can get it over 50% cheaper they can't answer.
To complete the experiment, I used my friend at a different address etc etc, his was a similar price to my partner.
So.... What else are insurance companies searching? I'm really worried that there's a mark against my name for some unknown reason. I'm worried this will affect insurance in the future.
Any help is appreciated.

Your age and postcode are very significant. More info would help.
If they are quoting less for a female *just because she is female* (which used to be the rule) that is now illegal, so I doubt that is the issue. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
The jobs you both do will have a large impact, what jobs do you both have?0

'Experimenting' on comparisin sites using your real details is not a good idea......perhaps thats why your quotes are not good.0

Thanks for the replies.
Were both 30+ (same age).
Same house, same address. Everything is the same. No convictions etc etc.
My occupation and hers are very different, but half/double different?
I'm wondering if something is on my record in error, would there be a way to check? I've not had issues like this with insurance before.0
