We have had many autos over the past 25 years due to my DWs mobility problems and while many comments on here are notable some are just prejudice!
So go for a petrol engine, between 1.5 and 2.0 try for non turbo as well.
Which box, well it depends on your driving style, if if are "heavy footed" accelerate hard, brake hard then a traditional torque converter with high fuel consumption is for you.
However if you are a sensitive driver, able to reduce revs when a gear change is imminent then a CVT or similar will last a long time and use much less fuel.
Best of the bunch IMO is the Ford powershift BUT when buying make it a condition of the sale that a proper gearbox oil change is done!0 -
For what you are looking for may I suggest looking at a 8-9 year old Jaguar XF with around 75000 miles on the clock and a decent service history?
The original XFs are bullet proof and the auto box is from Volvo so is brilliant.
Look to spend around £5 - 6000 for a good clean car. Diesel is preferred due to the better torque and fuel economy.0 -
Suzuki Kizashi.
It's an unusual car that would have sold a lot better if either (a) it had a different badge on it or (b) Suzuki had bothered telling anyone it existed.
Great build quality, and while the engine and gearbox were never the most modern, the advantage is that they are proven in real life over many years in other Suzuki models and are pretty bulletproof.
