looking for a large school bag

Thanks everyone.
He does get the detentions but this is not helping. I am concerned that after so many detentions in a short period they go onto the next level where they start to get exclusions. I am happy for him to have the detentions but if it gets to go up a level at that point I will have to ask them to take his disabilities into account.
His psychologist is recommending at the moment I do everything I can to make sure he does not get stressed (he is struggling to settle into big school) hence why rather than solve the issue of losing the stuff probably better to think of a way that he won't. He doesn't lose his main bag as he takes that everyday and needs it for every lesson.
Good suggestion about asking if they can find him an area where he can leave his kit in the morning and pick it up when needed. At primary he was given his own separate changing area to help stop distractions from others (he is too slow in getting changed), maybe I could/should ask for this but I am trying not to make him stand out as difference from his peers.0 -
Is it just me who thought it might veer off into fake uggs/plimsoles as school shoes?
Lol0 -
I don't really agree with just taking other peoples lost items to replace your own, his bag and stuff were left at the school somewhere, maybe it hasn't been found as someone else has had it (perhaps to replace kit they lost)
This isn't a new problem we had the same at primary school but it was easier there, smaller school which I used to be allowed in to search myself, plus the pe kit then was just cheap supermarket items easily replaceable. Now he needs expensive school branded sportswear. Parents with a forgetful child going up to secondary school beware :rotfl:0 -

Lol
There is time yet.....0 -
It's so difficult isn't it. On the one hand, if they suffer the consequences of losing the kit (detention, or having to sit out etc etc) you hope that they will put two and two together and start not forgetting. On the other hand, you don't want them to miss out on valuable school experiences.
Does he enjoy PE? Could losing his kit be a way of avoiding the PE lessons?
Granted your son's issues, surely the school should be able to do something on the quiet to help him?No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I'd take him round the sports shops, possibly the better ones which cater for hikers and walkers. We have a fantastic rucksack for DH which came from CostCo, it does have the three pockets, but a) I'm not convinced the sizes would be right and b) we do lose things inside the rucksack at times.
BTW, the one we use has a padded section intended for a laptop, and I've just looked on Amazon for laptop bags as we bought some for work recently. There's quite a few like this one, and I wonder if that could work for him?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Have you looked for bags in some of the bigger charity shops. Can you put a luggage label on it with his name printed in big letters?0

My son, also year 7 so new to having to carry everything around with him, has what I think was billed as a laptop bag. Bought from Sports Direct. It seems huge to me. It has two compartments and quite a large pocket which he uses for snacks as he buys most of his lunch at school. Presumably your son only takes his PE kit in on PE days (two per week in our case). Can you cut down the size of his lunchbox - eg wrap things in foil or bags etc instead of in a plastic box or get him to buy some of his food/drinks at school. Cut down on drinks bottles- just have one for water? Does he carry round all his books or sort through each day and only take the ones needed for that day?
Also everyone assumes he is being careless but is someone else "acquiring" his kit as this does happen either as bullying or just thieving.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I will look at laptop bags and in the outdoor/camping shops.
Fantastic idea of a luggage tag, I believe you can get some quite trendy style ones, this is something I will definitely be doing.
Also will look on the PE days (twice a week) to just put lunch loose in the bag no box, this will save space.0 -

Certainty if you put his name and the name of his school on the luggage tag that should help them eventually be reunited. As somebkdy else has said, if there is more then one school in the area people probably would find it too much effort to try and track down the owner.0
