MOT failure

water leak , did you not spot this when you did a pre mot check0

The coolant was low but I couldn’t see a leak, but last time it needing topping up was months ago so I dowt it was gushing out?
Should they have refused to do emissions based on a leak? I thought it needed to pool within 5 mins or something to fail?0 -
perhaps they felt that the engine would be damaged if they continued
"car" is a broad term , is yours petrol of diesel?0 -
If your car is a diesel the emissions test involves revving the nuts out of the engine up to the limiter. If the leak is from the water pump it could cause it to fail and if the pump is driven by the cambelt you could possibly end up with a wrecked engine if the pump seized.
If they've seen signs of a coolant leak at the crankshaft pulley end of the engine it is likely the water pump leaking hence them not willing to do the test because of the aggro of the fallout that comes if the engine goes bang whilst under test. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. It could be something as simple as a loose or broken jubilee clip or a hose with a tiny split in it.
I think they’re saying”major” as that’s the catagory level of defect MOT wise.0 -
