Reversed car into garage

So my partner somehow managed to reverse backwards on the driveway and into the up-and-over garage door.

The door is bent vertically down the middle, the metal door mechanism has been ripped off the wooden frame attached to the brickwork and we now have what looks like a giant cat flap, somehow only attached by the top.

We have home insurance with accidental damage cover with a £150 excess as well as car insurance. The car is generally fine but a bit scuffed.

What is my first step? Do I call the home insurance or get quotes or get someone to fix it completely?

Also we’d prefer to get a roller or sectional door rather than an up and over door, is this possible?

You will probably need to declare it to both home and car insurance. Who will pay? Maybe 50/50 as they are both liable?

Car insurance will not pay for damage you cause to your own property. The garage door will be a home insurance claim only. Car insurance will cover the car - if you do want to claim for a minor scuff.

In theory you should declare the accident to your car insurer whether or not you want to claim for the damage to the car. Whether I actually would in practice would depend on how likely I thought they were to find out by other means

It may be with getting an idea of the cost of repair before soaking to your home insurer. If it can be done cheaply it may make more sense to pay yourself than make the claim and end up paying higher premiums for the next few years. However speak to them before actually doing any work if you do plan to claim.

Obviously your home insurance will only cover the cost of a like for like relevent but if you fancy a swankier door you can ask about paying the extra cost yourself.
