Shar pei puppy

Hello everyone :)
I am hoping to hear from shar pei owners or anyone who has experience with the breed. My partner and I are seriously looking into buying a shar pei puppy from an assured and reputable breeder.

This is a decision that has taken months of research and discussion and we have fell in love with the breed. We are fully aware of the health issues these dogs have and the reputation these dogs have (so I urge you to steer away from the negatives).

Main question is how much do you spend a month on your shar pei inc insurance, which I think is vital, and is it easy to obtain insurance for this breed? Also vet bills, how hefty can they be?

Thankyou for reading

Why not, if they can find a decent breeder?
Keen as I am to promote rescues, it's not for everyone.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Artytarty do you own a shsr pei? Any particular reasons for your comment?

I will be getting it from an assured kennel club shar pei breeder who have bred to a high standard and try and keep health issues at a minimum (Well as much as you can with these dogs)

Are you aware of the many health problems they suffer as a result of being bred for their extreme heavy wrinkled appearance?

Please don't accept poor health as 'normal for the breed'. Its only that way because humans have done it to them, and by buying dogs that have been bred to suffer you prolong the suffering of many others.

My son is an orthopaedic vet.
Shar Pei come high on his list of dogs with serious joint problems.
Also the skin condition they can develop is very painful.

A Google search will give you options for pet insurance and a quote will tell you how much it would cost.

Premiums are based on dog's breed, your post code ( which indicates vet fee charges) and the dog's age so it is specific to you. Someone els's cost may be totally different form yours.

Vet fees vary depending on where you live and how healthy your dog is or isn't.

If you know the possible health problems then contact local vets and ask for an indication of what they would charge for treatment for them. Bare in mind costs will probably increase over the 12-14 years of your dog's life.

Insurance premiums also increase each year depending on what company you use.

As above but I wouldn't bank on 12-14, more 9-11 for a shortened lifespan.

Personally i'd contact Shar Pei rescue, because at least with an older one (tho some have pups), you know any health issues better and aren't encouraging breeding. I'm sorry, but getting an animal that is bred when we have thousands in rescue is wrong. I understand wanting a certain breed, personally I love Staffs, but not paying someone to keep breeding. There is no reputable way to breed an animal, it's exploiting the mother's reproductive system for our pleasure, just no

+1 to that. I love mogs but always have rescues, and happily pay the adoption fees. It is a good feeling knowing you have helped people who do what they do for their love of the animal rather than the love of money.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
