Friends Life/Aviva/Capita/What?!

Options
Hi all,

I'm in the process of trying to track down my late Aunt's insurances/bank statements/misc. because the solicitor that my utterly incapable uncle is using is inept and I'm left trying to make sure my Mum gets her part of the inheritance. (The whole saga laid bare here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5534687/co-executor-of-will-problems for those interested)

My Aunt held two insurance policies. All we know is that one was Friends Life, the other Friends Provident. We contacted them, they no longer exist. We contacted Royal London because their website said they'd taken over Friends Life, but we got a letter back from Aviva! Argh! However, Aviva only told us about one of the policies, so I wrote back asking for info on the second. We got a reply yesterday saying that they've "looked into it" and that the other policy was taken out with Capita. Eh? No, it was taken out with Friends Provident. Capita rang a bell for me though, so I Googled it and... Oh yeah, NOW I remember! DWP! So it's not THAT Capita then!

I can only find one other Capita that seems to be linked to a high-end investment company or something. So I was wondering if anyone here knows who the heck they are? This whole thing is doing my head in, I just want it wrapped up so I can stop doing the job the blasted solicitor's are supposed to be doing! I feel like I'm turning into Sherlock Holmes with all this tracking down of companies that took over other companies and now are a third different company! So any help gratefully received!

Fen,

For legacy life stuff, you are better off looking at Reassure, Resolution and Phoenix;-

    https://www.reassure.co.uk/about-us/why-reassure-has-your-policy/

    https://resolutionlife.com/our-history/

    https://www.phoenixlife.co.uk/about-phoenix-life/transfers-and-mergers

as these firms swallowed many firms who stopped their long-term life businesses.

Friends Provident rebranded as Friends Life following their purchase of AXA Sun Life. A few years after that, Aviva bought Friends Life. Most Ex FL plans are still being dealt with out of the old FL offices despite now having Aviva branding.

Occupational pensions are normally taken out via the scheme administrator. Capita are active in pension scheme administration. Whilst an insurer will often be named as the pension provider, all the administration will be done via the pension administrator. This may be the case here.

Capita are active in many business areas.

  • Do you know what year the policies were taken out?

I used to work for Friends Provident (until it became friends life).

Friends Provident was bought out in 2008-9 from memory, the company that bought them out also bought a few other companies up and combined the companies into Friends Life in around 2011.

Aviva then bought them out about 2 years ago.

So Friends life/friends provident are both now owned by Aviva. It is Aviva you need to deal with.
