New packaged account and the AA

I already have AA cover, which costs me about £17 a month. My bank has a packaged account which includes similar cover, plus travel and mobile insurance. That would only cost a couple of pounds more, so I'm tempted. However, what happens to my existing cover with the AA? Surely I wouldn't need to have 2 running until mine expires? It would seem daft paying twice, one by direct debit and the other via an account fee!

The bank packaged account won't be negotiable, i.e. it'll be all or nothing rather than being able to cherry-pick or reduce the price, so if you don't want duplication then you'd need to cancel your existing standalone membership.

Whether or not you'd get any money back for the unused portion of the annual subscription is dependent on the Ts & Cs so check these out....
  • I use Nationwide's packaged account and pay £13pm for car cover, mobile cover, worldwide travel ins...it's a pretty good deal, when compared with the AA's car cover only.
Probably best to contact the AA, and see how generous they are(n't)

£17 a month for AA cover? That's over £200 a year! You can get similar cover for less than a third of that. My first step would be to find out how much the cover costs elsewhere then use that figure when calculating whether the packaged bank account is worth it.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

..But it also includes (worldwide?) travel insurance and phone insurance.

Tot up everything individually and see if it works for you.

How much for AA cover
You really need to shop around MSE style.
I switch between AA and RAC each year to take advantage of their newbie offers and usually get it for a year for what it costs you for 2 months.

Yeah, they increased it at renewal. Unfortunately the letter was delivered to a neighbour and I didn't get it until it was too late. I did speak to the AA but they wanted to apply a cancellation fee that would have made it as expensive. It's now in my diary and I did ask them not to auto-renew.

@Andy it's Bank of Scotland, and my renewal is in May.

How many holidays do you take a year Don?

And where to - Europe or Worldwide?

You say the packaged bank account is "a couple of pounds more" - say £20 pcm that's £240 per year.

Work out how much you pay for your travel insurance per year and how much your breakdown cover will cost you (not this year's renewal) and then you'll know yourself whether you can make a saving by shopping around.

My mobile is covered on my home insurance so you might not need this additional cover.
