Question about rise in min wage?

I got excited when I heard the minimum wage and tax threshold is rising next year but then I thought about it. That will go up but will tax credits etc not reduce meaning the only people benefiting from this will be the government not the poor?

I havent read up on the budget to see if there are any income changes to benefits.

With that said, who do you think is responsible to give people enough money to live on? Their employers, who make big profits, or the government?

Nobody who works full time should need to rely on government benefits to survive. That responsibility falls to the employers. People should be paid enough to live comfortably on without additional handouts.

To say it will 'benefit' the government is short sighted. yes the government may have a lower benefit expenditure in your scenario, but do you not think that 'poor people' benefit from public services. The country does not have enough money. The government does not have enough money for public services.

Free bus passes are protected for pensioners. Councils cannot remove the free bus pass and ask pensioners to contribute to bus fares, so, what are they having to do instead? Cut bus routes! That they can do...

The money has to come from somewhere, and that place is not actually the government propping up low wages.

So to sum up then there’s been nothing done to benefit the poor?

Yes there has, it is allowing those on lower incomes to be more self sufficient by raising their earned income. When they do extra hours, they will get more money per extra hour.

benefitting does not always equal 'more money in the pocket' there is a lot to be said for self sufficiency...
  • Yes of course there is a benefit. You can now earn more money before paying any tax. Also, the minimum wage is rising.

This of course means you will be less reliant upon the Government top-ups, which can be withdrawn at any time.

How is that not good news?

It may not necessarily mean more money in your pocket, but look at the bigger picture. It is surely better to be more self-sufficient?

Yep, I'm sure all those hard-working families on min wage will be jumping for joy, meanwhile, the top 15% get a tax cut.

Not everyone on minimum wage is on benefits so plenty of people will benefit from it.

Like ohreally said if people want more money they should put the effort in and get a better job. There are lots of decent jobs in industries where national/regional skill shortages mean if you put in the effort to get qualified/experience you can get a decent job quite easily.

I already get paid just above min wage and that will go up again in April, and i will lose some of my tax credits, but i wont be any worse off. Plus i feel better knowing im not relying on taxpayers as much. I'm never going to be 100% self sufficient because of my disability but i'll try and get as far as i can.
