My suggestion is the Kia Picanto, not really sporty but cheap to run and insure.. Bought mine from new and the only thing changed has been tyres.

    Fun was a pre-requisite though....

I, too, wouldn't look further than an MX5.

If you can live with the constraints of one - two seater, small bootspace / no hatch then yes, great cars.

We've one on our radar again for next time :)

I've had maybe half a dozen so far over the years and they're fantastic.

They are not fun in the wet when you lose the back end on every roundabout. Some of the tyres they usually use on them are known as "ditchfinders " The things are lethal to drive except in dry weather. My friend spun hers on a straight road and ended up in the ditch
The best small car I have used is a Skoda Citigo, the worst , and it was brand new was Fiat 500

Get rid of the ditchfinders and learn to drive, problem solved.

As above, maybe your friend should learn to drive. I've friends who owned MX5s for years and find them the best fun they've had to drive in all weathers, some of them take theirs to track days.

As has been said if you're losing the back end at every roundabout
    (a) ditch the ditch finders
    (b) learn to drive properly

    or
    (c) stick with the power of a Citigo...

The OP should grow up/mature and forget about "having fun " on the public roads of the UK.
MX5 is utterly useless for everyday work horse duties but good for the people who run the salons
.Waste your money with the bores on track days where you can smash it up without taking anyone elses life if you want to tear !!! around like a loony
IF you want to get sensible and also buy the best deals search your local dealer who specialises in ex Motobility cars . 3 year old small cars usually with super low mileages.
eg currently on sale in Doncasters best dealer (cej3000) are 2 x 2015 Skoda Citigos with mileages of 3122 and 5000 at £5995 or the VW Up 2015 with only 1867 miles at slightly more £6250. This is a money saving website after all
