Freezer shelves for Uni student

Wasn't sure where to put this, but it's a sort of 'make do and mend' question.

DS is 18 and just started at Uni. He's in Halls of residence and shares a kitchen with 5 others. In the kitchen there's a fridge freezer but it's only got 1 shelf. The other shelves are missing. This is creating a bit of a problem with freezer stuff as everything has to just pile on top of each other on the only shelf there is.

My friend has suggested finding out the model and seeing if the missing shelves can be purchased maybe on ebay. I'll look into this if it's cheap enough but son won't be in these premises after this first year, so don't want to spend too much.

Anyone got other ideas for DS and fellow students to have their own space in the freezer?

Ask the housekeeping staff if they have any spare ones.

I'm surprised they use it anyway. Frozen Pizza maybe :-)
  • Depending on how wide the freezer is, cheap baking trays?

I know you can buy the coated wire shelves, but have no idea how much they are - think Lakeland do (or did) them, maybe a local hardware shop would do something similar

  • Mount a raiding party and liberate some shelves from the next kitchen along the corridor? It was probably them that pinched your son's shelves last term.

    Otherwise things like

A bit pricey perhaps but he can take it with him (if the other kitchen don't nick it first).

    Or baskets like these

or the wire shelves that are sold for organising kitchen cupboards, probably cheap in Argos/Ikea/Homebase sort of places

Six of them and one freezer and they're 18. There'll be no respect of the shelf if he sorts the problem....

Explain to him that sometimes in life it's "every man for himself" and he needs to just bundle his frozen goods up into his own identifiable bag and put up with it, it's just one year.

When my son was at university, in his halls of residence they each had a shelf in the fridge. There was complaints one weekend when a whole salmon on one shelf had dripped into the parmesan on the shelf below.

I would suggest the best way of dealing with the freezer problem is either putting a sticker on the food to clearly name the owner or using a permanent marker pen. If it's in the freezer it's likely to be there longer and as it's solid it doesn't matter if things are stored on top.
How big is the freezer, would boxes that stack help? Or even carrier bags.
  • Depending on how big the freezer is a couple of these shelves might fit. I bought one to make better use of cupboard space (measures approx 40cm wide, 23cm deep, 19cm high) and at £3.00 a cheap solution.

If he is in halls of residence , there should be a poster stuck up somewhere with the maintenance team's, and others, number on it. One of the students just needs to ring and the team will sort out shelves for them.

It may take a couple of calls :rotfl:

Your child is paying good money to be in halls and maintenance issues should be resolved quite quickly.

Short term, bags for life with names.

If the weather remains reliably cold, dangle said bags from windows. (At our Uni this caused immediate attention from Estates, and I would forecast shelves appearing on the condition bags disappear.)

I think when we tried that the mountaineering club got free food :rotfl:

    How things have changed.

Our campus shop used to sell individual fish fingers.
