DWP Checks

When dwp workers are going through your application form do they do a full check up on the postcode to see how many people are registered at that address and what benefits they are on?

Do they not require their consent or signature or national insurance number for them to check?

DWP do not require consent to check the validity of a claim. They can, and should, make all and any checks necessary. Making the claim automatically gives DWP the right to check.

When I first claimed Income Support when my husband left (I'm a carer), I was told that checks would be made to make sure that we were no longer together. At that point, we still had a joint bank account because we had direct debits due out. I was informed that I would not be paid any IS until I had a separate bank account and our joint one was closed. I was also asked about other people in the house.

The DWP will already have your NI number if you have applied for benefits, and by claiming, you are giving your permission for any necessary checks to be made. If you're not doing anything wrong, then I don't see the problem.
  • Agree with both of the above.
OP I'm wondering where you think they keep a register of who lives where?
