Hi all,

I tried to apply for a reward current account with the halifax several weeks ago, I also opted to use the switching service for the £75 credit.

I was using my home pc, edge browser using win10 got to the very end of the process then got a swirling wheel saying something like we are just submitting the application - do NOT refresh the page etc etc...
This lasted for 20 mins before the application timed out. I then tried again using Firefox and this time was told I would have to wait 30 days as I had another application in progress.

I waited 30 days, heard absolutely nothing from the Halifax, so applied again this time from my new iPhone - low and behold exactly the same thing happened.

Phoned the Halifax to be told it wasn’t a problem at there end so I paid a computer company to come out and check my internet connection,my computer and the new iPhone. The engineer firmly said there is nothing wrong he did a speed test and said I was getting VMs 200Meg service and he measured it at 215Meg. He totally re-formatted my pc (just in case) and he said everything is working 100% at my end.

I’ve tried again and the same thing has happened, Halifax now say I have no choice but to make a branch appointment. The PC tests cost me £60 and I really can’t afford to take time off work to visit a branch.

I’ve never had trouble opening any accounts in the past and my credit score is very high, so that shouldn’t be a problem- I really can’t understand what’s going on. Incidentally we tried with my partners details and the same thing happened when we used her old laptop running win7. Same silly turning wheel at the very end of the application.

I used the refer a friend scheme from Nationwide to recommend her and her application at Nationwide went straight through but neither of us get anywhere with the Halifax.

I’ve just about given up with the Halifax, I’ve spent over an hour speaking to 4 people at Halifax all to know avail. I’m fed up and I now give up!

  • Was there any reason you didn’t try a different browser on your computer, internet explorer seems to work on more sites with problems or even give chrome and Firefox a try before resorting to calling in technicians would be my advice next time.

I did try Firefox but then was refused because of a pending application that never was.

I thought using safari from my iPhone would help but after that didn’t and still the Halifax blaming my end, that’s when I called in an engineer in case my equipment had some sort of virus but he says not.

WHY? You can apply for it over the phone.

I found that out just a few minutes ago when they called me back about my complaint, they never told me I could apply over the phone at the time, that just makes my complaint to them worse.

So you did not see under the APPLY BUTTON the words....

You can also apply for this account by calling us on 03457 20 30 40 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm, Sat 8am-6pm and 9am-5pm) or visiting your local branch.

Yeah but they told me that wasn’t possible because of the initial failed online application, so I was informed either wait 30 days or make an appointment in branch.

  • I can sympathise, NoviceAngel, as I went through an almost identical process with the Halifax, when trying to open a simple Reward account.

I won't bore you with the ins and outs of it, but after having similar problems to you when trying to open the account online, ringing them several times and getting absolutely nowhere, despite being told by different people that it would be sorted, I eventually managed to get a successful application done over the phone, after kicking up the obligatory stink necessary to get anything done these days. The whole thing was a painfully slow process requiring a determined and tenacious personality, but we got there in the end. ;):p
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.

  • Same happened to me when I applied using chrome, it rather put me off opening an account if this is the standard of customer service.
  • Same problem here. Worked for me on Chrome. Then tried for my wife and had the timeout problem. Phoned Halifax and they cancelled the application. Tried again in Firefox and exactly the same problem. Phoned again and they are in denial there is a problem.
