Dodgy double glazing quote

Hi
A friend of ours recommend Crystal windows as we're in desperate need of new windows in our house. We have a 1930's semi which consists of 7 windows (one is a bay) and one back door which needs replacing. He used them a few years back.

So we had a guy come over and to be honest, he wasn't very nice...he was ok to my husband but he obviously had a problem with a woman asking him questions because he just snapped at me every time I had a question. He only put the quote in my husband's name to which rubbed me up the wrong way to! 😂 Then he started going on about Brexit and how English people want him out because he's from Europe! Highly inappropriate!

Anyway...he quoted 12k. Then he said if we agree there and then he'd bring it down to 9k, we wouldn't agree as I hate being pressured into anything so he basically stormed out the house mumbling under his breath. The following day (on a Sunday to) we get a call from the office to say if we agree to it within the next few hours we could have all our windows done for 6,500k.

Are all window firms like this and does this sound dodgy? 6,500k to get a whole house double glazed seems suspiciously low doesn't it? We're based in Hertfordshire in case area makes a difference in price.

Thanks

    Sounds about right for a double glazing salesman. I wonder if anyone ever agrees to initial quote... I hope not.

    Most of them are paid by commission only so go for the hard sell. Once they are in your house its difficult to get them out again without signing up. So, well done for getting rid of him.

    The only advice I can give is get some more quotes. I appreciate this will be a pain in the proverbial but you have little choice to make sure. Allways ask for referals from work done and check these yourself.

    I would get at least three quotes and take your time when you decide. You can also look online to see what sort of experience others have had with these firms.

    Another thing to bear in mind is you are entitled to a cool off period when you can change your mind.

    Hope it goes well.
  • Try some small local firms who have been around for a while instead of big names and ask to see some of their work in the area.
  • 6 and a half mil for double glazing...im out of touch with the current market it seems!
  • Mil? K.... Does that seem too low?

    6.5k = 6,500
    6,500k = 6,500,000

    Appolgies, was just a bit of sarcasm as Owen Money has pointed out

    6.5k = 6,500
    6,500k = 6,500,000

    so your post suggested a price of £6.5 million.

    In all seriousness though, ditch any company that employs such sales tactics. As for realistic prices, I paid around £4,500 in the last 3 years for the following:

    2 x 5 pannel bays
    5 x Windows
    1 x Set french doors

    Supply and fit from a local company, with FENSA certificate. Windows were well fitted (well sized to the gaps, attached properly, little to no expading foam or "PVC covers" at the endge, no leaks, no problems)

    I should point out im in West Wales, things tend to be cheaper round this part of the world.

    Do they have glass is West Wales? :)

    I would have said £4.5k is about right from (limited) experience. Used a local company, who make their own units and which I've used for french windows and who I thought were excellent
