Wow, thanks for all your help.

The OS and Old maps are the same map and they are from 1889 but there is nothing there (I know there was something here because I found it digging in my garden this weekend  )
so I need to find a map between 1889 and 1930 so I've narrowed down the seach, thanks.

I'll try the library at the weekend. Unfortunatly the deeds are with the mortgage company and I'm not so nosey I want it to cost me money :rotfl:

I never thought of a local history society. I know there is one in the next village that might cover my area so I'll see if I can find them and ask someone.

Thanks again for all your help.

Talking to your neighbours can also be useful. Apparently our house was owned by someone who was 'big' in the local tennis club but swindled all their money and ended up in prison. The original plot now has 3 other houses on it - glad our garden is now a more manageable size! And there are books about researching the history of your house, I know 'cos I've got a couple but goodness knows where ... Ours is interesting because there's a bit been added on the back, and we have a 'false floor' in one room, with an external doorstep underneath and we can't quite work out where the door was at that point! And in the garden wall there are steps which obviously once led up to a gate but now there's just wall, some local little kids always have to climb them and jump down on their way home from school, I discovered one day.
