Making payments to an HSBC credit card

I was just approved for an HSBC balance transfer card but the run around to setup and make payments has put me off.

I couldn't receive a confirmation they had correctly setup my standing order and they've told me in order to make ad-hoc payments I must contact my bank and have them submit the payment to the hsbc credit card. I have never heard of this before and it has me baffled.

Can anyone give me a little advice when it comes to making payments to HSBC? I don't want them to give any excuse to rescind on the offer they have given me.

The lack of being able to setup a standing order online or make any adhoc payments online (like every other credit card) has really put me off.

Just make a faster payment via online banking. You can use the same details to set up a direct debit.

Edit: copied the following from HSBC for ad-hoc payments. The same should work from any other bank (not just HSB online)
Log on to HSBC online banking
    1. Select your credit card account and then 'Move Money'
    2. Select the account you would like to send money from
    3. If this is the first time you've made a one-off payment to your credit card, select to move money to 'New payee' (if you've already paid this way, the credit card will appear in your 'My payees' list)
    4. Select 'Payee lookup' as the payee type
    5. Within 'Find a company', search for HSBC
    6. From the list of options available, select the type of HSBC Credit Card that you hold (Mastercard, VISA or Gold)
    7. Enter your 16 digit card number in the reference field
    8. Enter the payment amount
    9. Confirm if you wish to make the payment now or at a later date
    10. Generate and enter a 6 digit transaction code, following the instructions on the screen
    11. Continue and confirm the payment. The funds will be immediately debited but may take up to 2 hours to update the available credit. All payments are credited for interest purposes the same working day.

  • HSBC doesn't allow you to setup online payments or pay ad-hoc online unless it's coming from an HSBC bank account.

I don't have an HSBC bank account.
  • I've just checked with TSB, Lloyds and Nationwide. The instructions I pasted up in my last post works perfectly with all of them. I could try other banks but I can't be bothered lol. Which bank are you trying?

  • I misread what you wrote. I apologise.

I get it now. I just setup a new payee through my online bank using the HSBC credit card as the payee. I thought I could only do that with BACs and wasn't aware it would also work to pay a credit card.
  • I make manual payments to my HSBC credit card from my online banking all of the time.

Make sure you use the correct sort code and account number for your type of HSBC credit card and in the reference user your long HSBC credit card number.
  • I wasn't aware this was a thing because my other credit cards allow me to make payments and setup or amend direct debits or do ad-hoc payments online directly through their service.

I think having to post a direct debit mandate as well as doing manual payments to HSBC is pretty antiquated but they did give me a very good offer.
  • you can pay HSBC credit card from different bank account. I have tried using different banks. Different HSBC credit card has different sort code and account number to pay into.
  • I spoke to them on Saturday to check mine (I'm with a different bank) and it hadn't been set up even though I did it online. You have to call them up, they'll send you a mandate in the post, you fill it in with your bank account details and post it back. You can make manual payments too. Hope this helps!
  • HSBC are awful when it comes to credit cards. I had a balance transfer with them and was completley baffled when I couldn't make payments online. You have to make payments by online banking.

I closed the account with them. There are fair better credit card providers out there.
