Employers kept my old bank details?!

So I am paid weekly every Friday into my bank account, and in February this year, I advised my employer of new bank details for them to be paid into. They promptly updated this and my wages were then paid into my new account with no issues.

Last Friday the 20th they for some reason paid my wages into my old account that I had changed from earlier this year, despite having been paid with no issues to my current and new account for 8 months now?! For what reason would they keep this information?

So my question is, should my employers still have my old account details on record if they are no longer required? (Also as an important side note, the old account in question has a large overdraft that I have been paying off gradually for months, hence the new account being opened. And everytime a payment is made into that account, the bank see it as a payment towards my overdraft and the money is gone. So it took me having a very long phone call to the bank to retrieve these funds  )

Probably not a deliberate decision - a payroll clerk just didn't delete it?

You should ring payroll, complain about the error and make sure that the old details are deleted and the new in place.

There could be a bigger underlying issue here. How much interest / overdraft charges are you paying on that old account? Have you got an agreed payment plan with the old bank? Are you on the best possible terms for the repayment of the debt you have with the old bank?

Just to add to colsten's point, it's rash to stop paying your wages into an overdrawn account, as this makes it more likely that the bank will withdraw the overdraft facility and insist on prompt repayment in full....
