Planning a trip with multiple destinations?

Rail sounds a nightmare, so much time waiting around for local transport - buses, taxis etc - to get to and from stations, then the trains themselves, and how do you get around the destination cities?
Why aren't you driving it? Take the overnight ferry Hull to Rotterdam, you'll arrive well rested. Germany is a rather large country, suggest you home in on Nuremburg or Munich fitting in with Vienna or Salzburg in Austria. I'd skip Budapest as too far for the time available, but the rest is is easily do-able in 2 weeks.
A great many people -- myself included -- have really enjoyed Inter-railing. If the OP really does want to get a tiny taste of many different destinations then a rail pass is a good and enjoyable way to do this.0 -
https://www.seat61.com might help with planning train travel
This is an excellent site for information and Trainline Europe is good for booking trains. Ideally I would say that you need at least two whole days (three nights accommodation) wherever you want to stay as your "travelling days" can be tiring and you really don't get a lot of time for site seeing. Also book direct trains - it saves a lot of stress worrying about missing connections. Personally I'd stick to Amsterdam, Brussels and somewhere like Cologne or even Paris. Booking.com is good for hotels but book somewhere you can cancel right up to 24 hours before. It can be a little bit more expensive but it does give you peace of mind if something goes wrong. We got stranded in Holland last year on our way to Berlin because of bad weather and I was so glad that we hadn't taken the cheaper option and paid upfront.
Another tip. Take hand luggage only. You do not want to be dragging huge cases with you.
We've done two longish trips in the last couple of years and are doing another in January/February. t is a great experience. Ejnoy.Have adventures. laugh a lot and always be kind.0
