Are you sure that your DLA has been means tested?

    Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
You can only make a new claim for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children under 16.

It is not means tested you could get it regardless of how much income or savings you have.

For adults DLA is being replaced by PIP.
  • Sorry i get confused with all the new benefit words. It's ESA that partly got stopped, not DLA. Did ESA replace DLA, i cant remember?

Anyway i used to get approx £170 ESA per week. Letter last week confirmed as i had savings now, it has been reduced to around £110 per week

Not trying to put a dampner on anything, i'm in the same boat as you, wanting a buy a place. If any of your benefits are means tested, then to get them back, you will need to show that you havent spent the money to get the savings down...

As far as im aware, buying a house is not 'deprivation of capital', but having looked into it, there any many people on the net asking for help because the DWP have told them it was deprivation of capital.

Most of the advce seems to be, that you should be ok, but to get something in writing first from the DWP that you can purchase a property.

I rang to DWP twice, recorded the conversation, they told me both times that it wouldnt be classed as deprivation of capital. I dont have it in writing, but as far as i'm concerned, they have said its ok twice, and if theres any problems i will refer to what the told me.

You might not have any means tested benefits ha, so im prob not being much use. Just dont want you to get into a situation where the DWP start hassling you and being awkward.
