Bit of a problem after security checks

Hi
Carried out the security checks recommended - which thankfully found nothing amiss. However, now have a problem closing down the computer - displays a box with message "End Program - IEXPLORE.EXE" - program not responding
I suspect this has something to do with internet explorer - this now seems very unwilling to open unless I double click several times when I start my computer.
Anyway bottom line is that computer will not close down unless manually turn it off
I'm running windows XP BTW
Does any kind soul know what may have happened and how to fix things?
Cheers morzov
