Cancelling National Trust Membership

I have been a member of the National Trust since August 2014 - paying my membership by Direct Debit.
Each year I get a new card and the payments just continue. At no time have I ever signed anything to agree to join for another year.
I have just written to them to cancel my membership and they have replied as follows -
"Although the payments for your membership are made monthly, the membership you signed up for is a one year contract, and we must ask that full payment for the year of membership is made."
As I originally joined in the month of August they are saying I must pay another 8 months payments!!
Surely this can't be right?
I have paid the original years membership - i.e. 2014/5.
Has anyone any experiences of cancelling membership with them please?
Thanks in advance.

Terms and conditions of a monthly membership from their website -
"Your Membership
You agree to take out the selected National Trust membership for one year.
We will write to you shortly before the end of your membership year and supply you with a new membership card for the following year. You will be given the opportunity to tell us if you do not want to renew your membership for the following year."
Looks like the renewal letter with new card is when you have to tell them you don't want to renew. If you let it renew you renew for the whole year but pay by DD monthly.0 -

Thank you for that - I have searched the documents I received when I had the new cards - and there is no reference to having an option not to renew, or that it was a compulsory annual membership. The way it is worded is confusing in my opinion. Obviously I acknowledge that it's in the Terms and Conditions, I shall write to them for clarification.
Thanks again.0 -
When you write to them include the phrase please cancel upon renewal.0
