Friend paid money into bank account I closed months ago

A friend sent a payment of about £100 to my Lloyds Bank account that I closed six months previously. I now have no accounts with Lloyds.

This was about a week ago. I thought it might bounce straight back to her account as the account she sent it to no longer exists but there's no sign of it. I rang Lloyds and they said it might take ten days.

I don't know what goes on during that ten day period but has anyone any experience of how this works? Thanks

  • Did you close the bank statement or did they close it for you?
    Was it overdrawn?
If you defaulted and they closed it then they will keep it towards the debt.

If you did not default and the account was closed by you get the friend to trace it.

I closed it myself to move to another bank and it was in perfectly good order at the time, with no overdraft but a zero balance

So you have a closing statement?

Just one other point ask your friend to double check that the payment did not bounce back immediately or never actually left the account.

    Hi,

You said you closed the account down and moved to another bank was this via the Current Account Switching Service (CASS) if so the payment may get forwarded onto the new bank as part of the switching guarantee.

  • As mentioned above. Check your new account if you used the Current Account Switching Service as all payments will be redirected to your new account for three years.

In the end the money came back to my friend's account after about 4 days. Thanks for your help
