Making up hours

Hi,
My company is shutting for early for IT maintenance,
They have told us we can go home but will have to make the time up,
Is this normal? Its not the workers fault.
Kind Regards,
Richard

Some employers would do it. Others wouldn't. There's no "normal".

Fair enough, they said you CAN go home, not MUST.
  • Sorry, We do have to go home,

What I thought though, Its up to them

    Thanks for replies

I would say in that case, they ought to pay you for time lost through their fault.

Check your contract for there right to not offer work and not pay you.

They don't pay you for the work missed but by law they have to give you the opportunity to make hours up (a bit like in the retail sector and bank holidays).

Which law is that never seen one that says anything close to it.

Me neither, but what do I know about it? A few never before seen posters seem to think we don't know anything on here. Last time I looked, for employees it said the opposite!

OP, we need to know two things - how long have you worked there, and what are the terms of your contract (are you zero hours, guaranteed hours of work or what). It is possible you may have their legal right to be paid these hours. But that's not the same thing as it being sensible to demand it.

Watch out Sangie's back...reading into things that aren't there again.

Back on topic. Maybe not a law but something that allows people to make their hours back rather than dock pay?

So now your are asking us to tell you what "maybe law, maybe something else" exists to support the totally wrong advice you gave ???

OP, just answer the questions and ignore the upsurge in uninformed trolling. It's impossible for those who know what they are doing to advise you based on the information we have - but, to be clear, this isn't a choice for you and the employer is demanding you work back the hours? That may not be legal.
