Getting DLA for depression

I am on lower rate mobility and lower rate care for depression,I got the form a few months ago to get it renewed I took it to my local Welfare rights office he took about an hour to fill it in as my condition has got worse since I filled in the form 3 years ago he said I may qualify for a higher rate,I got an answer back this morning I`m still on the lowest rate for both" we have looked at the form and your medication" it says I can appeal but don`t know where to turn
The best person to advise you on this is the welfare rights advisor who helped you with the initial claim. You have 28 days in which to lodge an appeal. Before appeal your award will be given a reconsideration. However, you need to bear in mind that there is a possibility that you could lose your award althogether either on reconsideration or appeal. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
I think if you are working then it wouldnt be construed as serious depression.
I dont know if people would believe you cant look after the children and do basic everyday things if you work.
Serious depression, such as the PND I suffered would make it impossible to work, which you need huge mental energy to do.More energy to do than stay at home.
I know some people get dla in work, maybe a cpn could offer suggestions. If you find something irritating in my post or that you disagree with, then please don't jump on me ,just please ignore my post.I have come to the site for useful information and not to argue. thanks.0 -
OH has suffered Depression, anxiety, low self esteem and no confidence for many years on and off (more on than off) and it has affected his everyday living in that he has lost jobs because he sometimes can't face the world or panics if he is asked to do something he isn't sure about and walks out, so has been self employed for a number of years. His earnings are very intermittent and he has been for counselling, psychotherapy, on numerous medication. It totally messes up the way he thinks about anything, things get very out of proportion and he gets paranoid.
With children it has been very hard and he has recently had to declare himself B/C because it affects his earning capability over the years.
I think its one of those illnesses that people don't understand because on the face of it theres no bandages or visible signs but I know from my experience with OH it can turn a 6ft, 17 stone man into someone who cowers away and jumps at every sound.
Its also an illness that once you are deep in its grasp you do things that seem totally irrational to those around you. My OH is a proud man and i'm sure some people think hes just lazy because they don't understand but when you live with someone suffering and see the pain and distress it causes to that person its horrible. We love what we are doing and we love why we're doing it!!0 -

Hi, just wanted to say it is possible to work with serious Depression if they get the right meds & the form is supposed to be filled in as if you weren't on meds! I get lower rate mobility & higher rate care & did whilst working too, I have Borderline Personality Disorder & Type II Bipolar Disorder
I just had to fill in the application for next year & it took 5hrs! Can't we just put same as before!0 -
Sorry you're having such a tough time at the moment.
In my opinion, you will be unlikely to receive DLA. I got it for depression years ago but like others in here, I was unable to look after myself or my children and I definitely would not have been able to work. Dh was quite literally watching me 24 hours a day. I was also sectioned a few times.
I've had depression since (several times) but not as severe thank goodness - I saw a psychologist who helped me lots. It's still awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone but I can get by day to day and don't need to have someone take over everything for me. You seem to be in this position now, from what you've put here.
Re the point about working - I think the fact that you are working and are not taking any meds won't go in your favour. I guess they'd feel you would be ok on meds, if you are able to look after two chioldren and work while off them.
I'm not belittling you symptoms - please don't think I am or would, knowing as I do what it's like.
I guess you could always try and the worse that will happen is it'll get refused. I would get a welfare advisor though - they were a great help to me.
Good luck with whatever you decide.0 -

Also before applying for DLA you have to have had the current condition for the preceeding 6months and it must be expected to last for the at least the next 6months. That might be worth bearing in mind before you start to complete the forms.
its preceeding 3 months and expected to last another 60 -

you need to go back to your cpn who can review you. If you need to talk we're here but don't do anything silly because no matter how low you're it isn't worth killing yourself, you can't reverse this.

Working has nothing to do with whether or not you get DLA.0

1 post at half past 4 this morning and you registered just to post that, along with searching back for this thread, why not just post a new 1?
Are you after sympathy? Please dont commit suicide from everyone?? Why?
I cant help but think you are trolling but if you're being serious, you need far much more help than what any of us lot can offer you.
Ring the samaritans on 08457 90 90 90 and talk it over.
Good luck and cheer up0
