Yes god forbid anyone would wish to have a small human pop out and then take care of it,my goodness could you imagine if all the other animals we share the planet with did such a ridiculous thing.
I have no idea what you are talking about!

I was talking about possible discrimination in the context that male and female have IDENTICAL jobs and yet the woman is the one reducing her hours for childcare.

It is admittedly their decision to make as a couple, but I was just challenging it because in this day and age it is also appropriate for the male to be the one who spends the majority of time rearing a child.

Quite why you brought up the animal kingdom is beyond me, as I suspect that there are many species (please don't make me research them, I'm hoping you just take it as a logical fact) whereby the female almost exclusively raises the young! I sort of feel that what THEY do is ridiculous, but only because we are "more intelligent" and have the capacity to consider issues such as "discrimination" and "equality for women".

Im old fashioned and stuck in the past..but it was lovely when the wife had our twins, she wanted to stay at home and look after them (She was made redundant whilst on maternity from the forensic science laboratory where she worked) and i was lucky that i could work extra hours to support all of us.

Righto. Not really relevant to anything I said, but hey ho!

She went back to work (some might call it lesser type work) earns reasonable money and loves her flexible work/home life and is proud to have been a stay at home mum looking after her children rather than expecting someone who is paid,to care about them as much as she/we do...never going to happen is it.

    Interesting, but again not relevant.

Personally for a old fashioned low intelligence person like me...id ask myself why im having a baby if all im concerned about is rushing back to work...babies are only babies for such a short space of time,id grab every second of it.

Not relevant, but I do agree. But I also agree that the MAN should also "grab every second of it". The attitude you show towards this is probably ingrained in you, but the world has become a bit less "old fashioned" and these days there is more "sharing the load" rather than the WOMAN cutting their hours and the MAN earning the crust.

    Ah ok!

Fair enough! Yes, nothing wrong with being a housewife.

My point was more that, in this day and age, OP should not be made to feel COMPELLED to become one (or even close to being one) if they share an identical job with partner. Though it does depend on what they decide upon, as a couple.

You seem to think that working is better than raising kids... you're wrong

Not often I disagree with you Comms, but there isn't a right or wrong, it depends on the person.

For me, working would always be better, I can't stand children and have a proper full on phobia about babies and toddlers (babies are easier, they are less mobile).

    Each to their own:D

    Sure, that's fair.

I just think that there's a growing sentiment that working parents are somehow taking advantage of their non working partners

Maybe identical jobs, but may not be identical terms/pay/pension

For one I'd be willing to bet her maternity package is much better than his paternity package. He may only be able to take 2 weeks off whilst she has 8 months? pretty big gap in child care already.

Parents can now share Parental Leave, and be paid at the same rate (but not both at the same time!), but it means he can take a lot more than 2 weeks off if he chooses to.
