BT 'equipment charge'

I know that there have been posts on this before, but the last I could find was relatively old. I am switching from BT broadband and home phone (to Vodafone, following current MSE cheapest buy advice). Because the original date for the switch was going to be 3 days before the end of my BT contract, BT were going to charge me £65 as an 'equipment charge'. Following previous advice on this site, I rang BT who confirmed that if I moved the change over date by 3 days then there would be no charge. I assumed that they would want the equipment back, but no. So the charge is entirely raised on the hope that you won't question it or realise that all you need to do is dovetail the start date for your new provider to be the day after your BT contract ends. Not a scam as someone described it in an earlier thread, but a pretty sneaky and simple way for BT to raise a charge for doing nothing.

They may ask in the future for the equipment back to recycle .
You take out a contract for 1 year and get equipment, at the end of the contract you own it .
