Wheel Bearig Replacement - Brake Issues?

Hi all,

I had a wheel bearing replaced on my Citroen C3 (2011) as it was failing and making a hideous noise. Since then I have driven around 45 miles and now notice that the front disc on that wheel doesn't look like the brake pad is contacting all of the disc, so I now have a 'doughnut' of silver surrounded by rust on the disc - this was not the case before they changed the wheel bearing. The other side is completely silver still, as both were before the change.

Is this to be expected as they will have had to take the pads / discs off to change the bearing? I'm taking the car back to them on Friday.

Many thanks, David

Sounds like the caliper has seized - could of a coincidence or something they have done. Cant prove it either way but needs sorting ASAP.

I would take the wheel off and look at the caliper, see if the piston moves when brakes applied.

    Hi Foxy-Stoat,

I can't take the wheel off at the moment but the car drives fine. Would there be any noise present if the caliper had seized? The disc doesn't appear to be getting unnecessarily hot, which I would expect if it had seized?

Did you pay for new brake pads?
With a shot wheelbearing the disc wobbles all over the place, and the pads are unlikely to wear evenly, so now won't contact the disc fully.
New pads might cure it, but get it looked at quickly, as once you get a ridge of rust formed. no amount of new pads will shift it.

Why not, no jack or wheel brace?

It wouldnt make noise if the piston has seized in the caliper. It wont get hot as no contact is being made - dangerous if you were to brake hard when travelling fast as it will brake uneven.

Silver ring with rust on the rim is normal. the pads do not contact the very edge of the disc.

Its possible, but more likely that you didnt notice how the discs were wearing, they do tend to develop rust on the inner and outer edges.

That is more common on the rear wheels, is this the rear, especially with cars that are low mileage.

Sevenhills - both front discs were wearing the same before the wheel bearing was changed, and both were silver from the inner to outer of the disc. Since the change the changed wheel side is only contacting approximately half of the disc surface, whilst the unchanged wheel remains across the whole surface of the disc.

Façade - I didn't have the discs changed at the same time as the garage said that there was no need, we'd caught the wheel bearing before it got too bad.

Foxy-Stoat - I live on the outer Hebrides and don't have anywhere sheltered to take the wheel off, and there's no-one who could press the brake whilst I looked at the piston unfortunately.

The car is back to the garage tomorrow for them to have a look. Could it be that they've put the rear pad to the front and vice versa, hence the different wear patterns?

Most likely is simply that the disk is slightly worn and the pads were worn to match. When they're removed and replaced they'll never sit exactly the same so have to bed in to the surface of the disk again.

Meanwhile, especially somewhere as damp as the Outer Hebrides, rust is going to form quickly on the parts of the disk not being touched. In which case it'll clear itself up in a week or two as the pads bed in again.

Hi all, just to let you know that the issue was that the mechanic had put the inside pads on the outside and vice versa, so they'll just need time to bed back in again.

    Thank you for your help!
