Clarification on how Universal Credit sanctions work?

Can anyone clarify for me how UC sanctions work in practice? I will provide a hypothetical example below to explain what I mean.

John is in receipt of Universal Credit Standard Allowance for 25+ (£317.82).
He is paid on the 16th of every month (7 days after end of assessment period), and they are as follows;

July 10th to August 9th
August 10th to September 9th
etc

On August 1st, John receives a medium level sanction for 28 days. How will this effect his UC payments?

In layman’s terms does it basically mean that John will lose 8 days worth of money during the first assessment period, and 20 days in the second one? But still be paid SOMETHING on both payment dates? Albeit a reduced payment whatever the prorata daily allowance works out at?

Or does it mean that as the 28 day sanction cuts into two assessment periods, he will get £0.00 for both of them?

Surely not as this would mean he wouldn’t get anything until Assessment Period 3’s payment date of 16th October. Even the DWP aren’t that cruel, are they?

Please feel free to simplify said example including dates etc if there is an easier way of explaining.

    The sanction is pro rata by daily deduction from each of the assessment periods. Something would be payable in each period.

    See paragraph 2077 onwards

    I thought so but thanks for confirmation.

    As every month has 30 or 31 days with exception of February I roughly worked out that UC standard allowance has a daily rate of approx £10.30 give or take

    Paragraph 2079 The daily reduction rate for the purposes of B2078 is, unless B2080 applies, an amount equal to the amount of the standard allowance applicable to the award multiplied by 12 and divided by 365.

    £10.45/day by my calculation
