Pension

Hi I wonder if anyone can help my mum had Alzheimer’s for many years with no POA when applied for her pension she only received her state pension but was untitled to pension credits but because we had no access to her bank statements couldn’t provide the particular statement the DWP required from a particular date so they refused to pay out the money she was entitled too she was in a care home they were quick to take the money for that however she had now passed away so we have access to her account is it too late to claim backdated money? Thanks inadvance for the reply’s

    I'm sorry for your loss. You may be able to make a claim for pension credit that is backdated by upto three months, but no longer that this. I don't know for certain whether you will be allowed to claim given that your mum has died and the benefit was intended so support the person claiming it. Perhaps you could update this thread with the outcome.

    I would call the Pensions Credit Claim line on 0800 99 1234 to check whether they will allow this.

    Given that a claim has to be started by the claimant I can't see that working.
    Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Assuming that she wasn't fully self funding any extra benefit money would have gone to paying towards the care home so she wouldn't have been any better off.
