An excellent point in which the snowflakes have missed. Well done Southend1.

Not sure who the snowflakes are, though you do seem to be missing the fact that following your advice is likely to cause suffering to others and result in OP being out of work in the new year.

Pot belly, let's hope you don't fall on your face on xmas day and break your hip and when you get to A&E you are told that your life saving surgery will have to wait because the surgeon decided he wanted to spend Xmas with his kids so called in to say his kid was poorly and emergency surgery will have to wait until the next shift.

OP opted to work in a field that means Xmas day work. It sucks but don't apply to a job (or worse train for it if OP is a social worker) if you don't think you'll be able to work certain days. I'm sure someone will be happy to look after their dd even if it requires some planning and travelling.
  • Just wanted to ask - if the OP was on a zero hourscontract, then wouldn’t that mean she obliged to not do any shifts in a given week if they wanted?

True and by the same token, the employer isn't obliged to offer any shifts.

From memory, the company I worked for split the shifts down on Christmas from 6 hours, into 3 hour blocks.

Most people worked; and only worked for a very short period.

    That is a good idea.

Getting people to do these jobs is hard enough in itself so employers should be looking to make things as easy as possible for them when they can.

    OP

Is there anyone you could ask to have your daughter over for a few hours or even sleep over that night.

I know you probably feel you cannot ask as it is Christmas day but I know if family/friends asked me I would be happy to help out.

It sure is. It's as good an excuse as any.

I said reason, you said excuse. Theres a difference.

Yes, and then the employer is not obliged to give her any work ever again.....

    +1

I cant believe the O/P has absolutely NO immediate family, greater family or friends at all that wouldnt facilitate this for the few hours necessary if all else fails.

Potbellypig will look after the child - except she'd cry off sick on the day!
