Transferring ownership of car - impact on insurance
Comments

Basically at the moment there's a witch hunt going on with the insurance companies because many parents are taking policies out on their kids cars as the main driver and putting their kids as a named driver when it's actually said offspring who drives it the most.
Do it properly and get him to insure the car in his own right. You're not doing him or you any favours. If the insurance company even sniff that what I've described is what the reality is, they'll void the insurance and in the event of an accident/motoring offence both you and your son will be getting hauled into the courts at best for no insurance and at worst for fraud, not to mention then being hauled through civil court for the cost of the payout.0 -
Thanks for the advice, I have thought about this but its difficult to say who really is the main driver. He is at university more than half the year and I'm the sole user of the car during that time. When he's at home he uses it probably more than me but not by much.
Any advice on the impact on insurance?0 -
Keep it in your name then. Doesn't seem worth the hassle if he uses it for the odd trip and not for going to and from work or university etc. Or maybe he could take the car with him to University, although knowing the Universities I've been to not go to University in it due to parking.
AFAIK only thing is they'll only let the named owner be the person to be insured on the car, as you can't usually be insured on a car you do not own. So stick with it as it is, or swap to his name and get him as insured driver, and maybe putting you on will reduce the quote a little (seems to in some cases).0 -
Yeah, I'm with "anewman" on this. Sounds like you're doing it the right way round anyway.
Just to correct "anewman", you can insure a car you don't own/aren't the registered keeper of. I've just sold a car that was my missuses but I insured it with her as a named driver. (Complicated story but nothing nefarious going on).0 -
The reason I want to change the name is because he can then get a permit for it and park it near his work during his holidays. Can anyone give me some sort of indication on how this would impact on insurance?0

I would echo what others have said and say UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES change it to him as the owner unless you are going to change the insurance policy to him as the main driver. If he makes a claim the insurance company will accuse you of fraud and not pay out.
Keep it the same or get a few quotes with him as the main driver.0
