Hi all

I have an unvented direct water cylinder which has two immersion heaters.

I have searched google and cannot find the answer to my question which is, how do I know what temperature my thermostat is at? My thermostat only has numbers 1-5 and no degrees celsius.

Does anyone know please?

Thanks

The only practical way is to run the immersion heater until the thermostat switches off (you might hear a 'click') then run the nearest hot tap until the water temperature is constant and measure the temperature with a suitable thermometer.

This is only going to work reasonably well for the upper 'boost' heater/thermostat

Even thermostats with degrees C markings are not necessarily accurate.

There are alternative methods, but none that I'd recommended.

Do you really need to know.

Set it to 3 to see if the water is hot enough, if it's not then increase it to 4 or even 5.

The higher you set it the hotter it'll be and the more it'll cost you to heat

This any good to you ?

    Go to heatrodshop.com technical-FAQS

    Q. What are the temperature setting on a Cotherm TSE 00187 Thermostat?
    A. 1 = 10°C, 2 = 25°C, 3 = 40°C, 4 = 55°C & 5 = 70°C
  • Needs to be 60°C+. Bacteria such as Legionella are killed off.

Top stat is a small amount of heated water and usually wired to an E7 electric water 'on demand' controller. Bottom stat is the large volume which would usually come on automatically overnight.

    Thanks everyone.

Each Penny I’ll try what you have suggested

Another question - is the bottom immersion (economy 7?!) timed to come on by the electricity supplier or should it Be in use straight away when switched on?

I had no hot water for a couple of days. It’s sorted now and I have turned both immersion heaters on but the bottom one isn’t being used so either it doesn’t work or it’s being used overnight.
  • You can't (or should NEVER) be able to have BOTH on together - that's 6kW. There should be a water heater controller fiited that ISOLATES meaning you can't switch the 'on demand' top immersion element timer on when the lower element is LIVE.

There is an LED light on the hot water controller that indicates LIT when the cheap night rate bottom 3kW element is activated.

The switching to 'cheaper [30% cheaper] night use tariff' is done remotely, out of your control.

Only you know if your on E7. You are the (deemed) account holder go to your online account and check - QUICK. Best of luck.
