Royal Mail Special Delivery tracking problem... again

I sent a letter by Special Delivery yesterday. The late update was at 9:30pm and nothing. AFAICT there's been no attempt to deliver it as it hasn't even made it as far as the local mail centre.
This has happened to me several times. I'm not a vendor who sends out a lot of items by post, just a random person who occasionally sends letters, but I use Special Delivery as I'm autistic and I worry about whether or not they'll be delivered.
A couple of times I've put in a claim for late delivery which has been upheld but given the number of times my Special Delivery items vanish for 24 hours or more within Royal Mail's system I have to wonder whether my expectations of "before 1pm the next day" are unrealistic, whether I'm phenomenally unlucky or if there's some other problem? The SD items are regular items, letters in A5 envelopes delivered to the local post office personally and within the UK (actually within England).

Did you send it before the last collection at the post office you used?
If so, and the service is not provided in the timeframe paid for, you can claim the extra SD money back.0 -
i use special delivery for some items. I'm running at about 50:50 for the advertised delivery time. I always claim my money back for a late delivery.0

Re waamo, that sounds even more unfortunate than my experiences!0 -
I look on the good point. I get cheap special delivery in essence. On some occasions the just forget to get a signature. Nobody has ever denied it's been delivered so I'm kind of up on the deal.0
