Advice please

I bought a car and it drove well but had a misfire. I put it in the garage and they have charged me £300 for diagnosing the misfire, but not fixing it, and said it needed a new engine costing £1000. But now the car is not running at all and the garage said I will have to get a transporter to collect the car. Any ideas legally what I can do.

Did they give you an quote for the cost before they started? Or an estimate based on X hours at £Y per hour?

What exactly did you ask them to do?

Where did you buy the car from? A dealer? A friend? Auto Trader?

How long ago did you buy the car?

And when you say "legally what you can do" do you mean against the seller for selling a car that has broken down? Or the garage for not fixing the car?
  • No they did not give a cost. I said I didn't have a lot of money to spend on the car. I was so shocked when they said it cost £300 and that now the car doesn't even run. I asked them to see what was causing the misfire.
  • Bought the car from auction 1 month ago. I mean against the garage. The car drove great apart from misfire.

So what's the actual diagnosis that you paid £300 for?

Hint, "ya need a new engine" is not a diagnosis. What is the cause for a news engine?

Whats the car worth if it was running?

A new engine isnt £1000 - it will be considerably more.

The garage wasnt kwikfix or Halfrauds by chance?

Hmm, you bought a car, with an unknown but potentially expensive fault that you knew about, from an auction.

Has the garage told you what the fault is?

An unwarranted second hand one might be.

That crazy most garages dont do that

the place i use only charge £60 for a diagnostic for an hour, if they cant find the problem within the first hour then they call you to give an estimate on how long they think it will take them to find the fault, after that its the customers decision if they want to continue with the diagnosis or call it off and collect the car

so this garage has taken the pi$$ and i too would be annoyed like other have said did you buy from a trader or private sale if it was a trader yo should have called them and let them know what the problem is
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”
