Phone call today from EDF Energy

Just received a phone call - voice said it was 'utility company' (not mentioning edf) was about to say i didnt want to change and hang up - when i realised it was actually from edf (my supplier for both gas and electric). It appears that if you dont confirm each year that you want to remain on the same tariff they automatically change you to a tariff 25% higher. As this is the first time ive ever heard anything like this i asked the man if all utility companies do this -- he said yes!! and also said there are probably thousands of people paying higher bills than they need to because they havent realised they have been changed to a different tariff - he said this was because they hadn't renewed their existing 1 yr contract. Im only posting this to make people aware that this can happen and to see if anyone has ever heard of this before?
