Just a thought because it makes your short term living a little uncomfortable but could you not in theory take all your valubles, (i.e the TV, Fridge etc) to someone elses place for a week or two. Let the bailif in and just sit there laughing at the little turd whilst he quickly realises their is nothing to take. He then passes back the debt to it's original source and hey presto!?

Have you asked about the Hardship Fund, which is based on your actaul income expenditure and debts?

And would you be better off getting the Child Care Allownace associated with the degree rather than Child tax credits. You can only have one, but perhaps you should find out which will bring you more money?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • One I suppose could rant and say. I am a council tax payer and they are only doing their job. But having been to uni myself, I know how disruptive this can be and I am sure, as one rock is disturbed, others around them start to fall apart, sometimes very quickly. This I think has happened in this case and the OP, imo, needs to get a good grip on the situation.

1 As a student, you should be entitled to a reduction in the Council tax

2 Make sure you and partner do correctly claim a rebate for the Council tax

3 When did you last speak to your mortgage lender? If not, it may be time to start (When I finished uni in 1999, I went 6 months without paying and this was in the full agreement of my building society) If you get in now, they will be more listening, then when the send out the boot boys

4 If you do not get out and sort things out, the bailiffs and the mortghage lender will start to add their expenses.

Note from 1997 to 1999, I paid my mortgage in cash every month, until six months from the end of my degree course. On one occasion, the regional manager was at the building society, collecting a pile of files, the manager noted my entrance and explained who I was to his manager. They quickly found my file, and he chuckled a little. With that he picked up the smaller second pile and exited with the words 'These will soon be out of their house!' A few weeks late, just opposite me, a couple who had a nice car had a literal rude awakening one morning, as the dustcart turned up and the bailiff's, together with the local gendarmerie, went up to the front door. The soon entered the property and removed all of their goods to the pavement, as the woman remonstrated for a while. One hour later, the men in the dust cart started to clear the pavement of their prized possessions.) When I sold my house two years later, I explained to the estate agent when he recounted his side of the story, 'oh, remember that couple across the road, they were two months in arrears with the XXXX Building Society!' I retorted, 'When we sell this, I will be about seven months with the same!' He did a dead rat! I got another mortgage elsewhere, by shopping around and not taking the first offer! And the power company gave up at the same time and let me pay when I restarted work!

PS, it took nearly another 2 years to get the Council Tax right!
  • The problem is if you know how to say it in the right way. If you do not then you are stuffed.

Well, have officially withdrawn from Uni (in the process of, anyway). All got too much, wasn't sleeping, nursery fees just too money, etc, etc. Will re-apply next year so gives me a year to sort things out.

Had another letter from the bailiff through the door today, while we were both out. Another 'pay full amount in 24hrs or else' letter. He can post all the letters he likes - he shall not pass!

It's in the hands of one this sites resident experts now though, so am feeling confident and happier than I have in weeks.

    Thanks Herbie - you're fab!

A quick one if the turd is allowed in once he can come in as many times as he wants.
