How can I found out who supplied the phone in new house?

I have recently moved house and want to get my phone line connected. I rang BT and they told me that the line is currently with another provider and it will cost £125 to reconnect me to BT.

Is there a way of finding out who provided the telephone before? I do have the old telephone number.

    Does the line currently work?

If so, who do you get connected too when you dial 150?

If it is not BT then it is likely (though not definitely) to be your local cable provider.

Also, have you got a brown box on the outside of your house where the cable comes in - if so, does it have any symbol on it? Does the master socket have a symbol on it?

I used to work for a cable provider, and loved people dialling 150 from the cable phone and assuming they were still going to get through to BT! x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I tried 150 last night and there was no response.

As far as I know there is no cable in the area (Chatteris).

I will see if I can find the box tonight (possibly a bit tricky in the dark!)

Does the telephone line work at all? (i.e. is there a dial tone?)

According to this, the Chatteris exchange has no LLU providers or cable coverage - so if another provider has the line, its been done via Wholesale Line Rental..

  • There is a dial tone (or there was last night!)

Is there anyone who I can get to reconnect the line cheaper than BT?

I am only really interested in broadband as we tend to make very few calls with the landline

Are you in a cable area? If so, you can have broadband without a phoneline.

What happens when you dial 150? Sorry, just noticed you have tried. What do you mean by 'no response'?

If there is dial tone then it is wat we call a 'worker,' i.e. it has dial tone and doesn't need an engineer to connect it. Phone BT and inform them of this.

Could you ring the people who moved out of your house and ask them?
