Hello,
I have an meeting with the social work to discuss changing the way care is supplied to my disabled brother by making direct payments for him to employ people.
Anyone been down this road and advice what to take with me to the meeting?
Thanks.

You need to understand the employer obligations that may come with this.
Have a look at this website https://www.disabilitytaxguide.org.uk and particularly this introductory guide https://disabilitytaxguide.org.uk/about/resources which explains the things you need to think about and might help you ask the right questions.
Some Local Authorities provide support with payroll and other functions of being an employer or have contracts with local third parties that do.

If you can get payroll support for the direct payments then i'd 100% advise this because it will certainly make it much easier for you to understand.
My daughter receives direct payments and i employ a support worker for her. I have full control over her direct payments because she's unable to manage them herself.
It took me many months to fully understand what everything was and i had the support from payroll. Actually there's still so much i don't understand, but i'm getting there. My daughters support worker was advertised through payroll and they send me all payslips every month. They also send me details of what needs to be paid to HMRC and the date it needs to be paid by. They sorted out the insurance that's needed too which was good. If it wasn't for payroll i know i wouldn't have managed it all myself.0 -
I employ PA/carers x 3 via direct payments.
I much prefer it as there is more flexibility in terms of when the call happens, what we do and who comes.
Some authorities abandon the DP user others are really supportive so do ask what support is available.
My county provide employers insuarnace, run dbs checks and have two options for payroll either fully managed they do everything you just email in the hours if different to 'normal' or part where they produce payslips and tax forms and then I transfer money by BACS for wages and tax.
There is also support with recruiting, job adverts and contracts here. This again isn't available everywhere. I have done my own as it was quicker and have always had one PA to help me recruit the others.
Of course you can use it to employ an agency yourself which takes away payroll needs. Again this is an advatage as you liase with the agency rather than social worker so in my case my needs were met better.
I much prefer being a DP employer than a 'client' for social services0
