Part of the problem is that staff at London terminals no longer give accurate advice/information to passengers whose journeys have been disrupted by other train companies (other than the company that runs the London terminal). I recently suffered from this, and my MP (Cat Smith) worked hard on the case and raised the problem with the Department for Transport. I suggest, therefore, that the OP should write to his MP and mention that Cat Smith has recently worked on a very similar issue, or perhaps copy his letter to her.

Kings Cross (operated by Network Rail) isn't as bad as say Newcastle or York, where the LNER will take one look at a "TPE only" ticket and decide you are below fare dodgers and will treat you with "you need to catch the next TPE service in an hour and change at York to see what they say"
