    I would go to Bali.

The best rates for "minor" currencies is always in that country as they will have lots of it. There is insufficient demand in the UK for banks and bureaux de change to offer competitive rates.

Go to one of the ATMs inside or outside DPS airport on arrival and withdraw your Indonesian rupiah, using a suitable fee free debit or credit card, which can also be used for payment in most tourist area shops and restaurants.

If you really want to exchange cash pounds, the best rates will be in Bali, take clean crisp fifties/twenties and haggle a little.

It's not clear from your post if you're asking about getting rupiah here in the UK or in Bali.

If you are changing money on the street be wary of scams.
The places that advertise the best rates may well try to rip you off.
Lots of advice and warnings about changing money on the Bali board on TripAdvisor.

Agree 100%. Once the cash has been released by the thief behind the counter, under no circumstances let him touch the money again.

Count it at least twice before leaving the counter.

Tourist areas are worst.....Kuta, Legian and Sanur.
