O/S Daily Sunday 21st October 2018

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Good morning all

Gentle hugs to all who want/ need them.

Not much sleep again, tired until my head hit the pillow and then I was wide awake.

Going to visit mother this morning, not sure what else we will do.

poppy Please keep posting xx

silver-oldie Olliebeak and nannywindow (I've replied to you all at once, hope you don't mind!) I can't find a definitive answer, even on the Garden Law website. My house insurance has legal cover but I'm not sure I want to ring them yet (or even if it covers this sort of thing), it might flag up and I'm worried that it'll affect our premiums even if we don't claim. The council's website only covers hedges, not a single tree, so I can't do anything through them even though the damage risk is the same as two trees together (that counts as a hedge!). The owner of a hedge can be made to keep it below a certain height, but I can't find anything that says it must be planted a certain distance from a building (obviously most are OK, I'm specifically looking at leylandii here). I can only do something once there's actual damage, and I have to pay for their visit, though I might get a refund if it can be proved that the tree is at fault. I'm sat here going – !!!!!!?!!
Another neighbour told me about a time when he built a bench near a nuisance tree - the drill accidentally fell to the ground where it damaged one of the larger roots then creosote got into it while he was painting the bench :D You can't buy creosote now, not sure if creocote is strong enough for the job, but I might try it as a last resort, lol.

I've found out that it's safe to use leylandii leaves as 'flooring' in the chicken shed and on muddy areas in their run. It's also good for laying down between raised beds to help with weeds and to stop us sinking into the mud, lol. I need lots of ideas to help get rid of it all, though I'm tempted to just chuck the lot over the fence into neighbour's garden :D

Scampi's morning walk yesterday was almost non-existent – we didn't even manage to get to the corner, about 100ft away, without having two massive tantrums. I looked at him, hackles (and pretty much the rest of his fur, lol) were up so we turned around and came back home. It took longer to get treats, bags, etc. ready than the actual walk was :D

Hopefully I'll be making a start on those fruit bushes today. I prefer to garden late in the day, then I can get messy, jump straight in the shower and put my pyjamas on early in the evening. But it looks like rain this afternoon so I'll have to do it this morning and try to stay relatively clean :D

Morning All

Thanks for starting us off SO, hope you find something good to do today.

It's wet and windy here this morning but fairly mild, the washing will go on the pulley and airer, I seem to have a lot at the moment, yesterday's can go in the TD to finish off.

I went to yoga yesterday then went to the allotment to tidy up. I've dug up all the potatoes as the damp weather could make them all rot, I now have a huge bag for life full, the neighbours have had some but there are so many and I hardly use them. I think I'll see if I can get a paper sack and store them in the shed.

After all that activity I'm really stiff this morning! DD and BF coming for dinner, I'm making a parsnip pilaf, vegan friendly of course. Also going to make some meringues from aquafaba, could be interesting!

Pleased to hear CHS is OK HH, hope he has a speedy recovery.
My thoughts are with you Holly, taff, Polly and TA.

Happy Sunday! Take care. XX

Camelot, I wonder what convoluted brain first thought to try making meringue with chickpea water?

Poppy, I hope you had a better night, also taff, Holly and any other poorlies.

TA, I hope things are going ok with all the arrangements.

Steve is going to the gym this morning, hopefully he will be sensible and not overdo it. We'll probably go over to see Chris and Crystal at some point as they didn't get here yesterday. I'm really lucky that I have such a good relationship with Crystal because I've heard some horror stories about daughter-in-laws (should that be daughters-in-law?). We've known her since she was a shy 16 year old and now she's a lovely woman.

Apart from that I need to do some vacuuming and some sewing, just a quiet life really.

Good Morning, everybody :hello: - another beautiful start to the day here, forecast is for 15C with light cloud and slight breeze ................... not bad for late October :j! Had a text from Mr Lawnmower Man last night, to say that he'll be grass-cutting today - not sure if this will be the last of the year, sometimes he continues into November.

silver-oldie - thanks for starting us off for today :T. I think the Sleep Fairy needs a map to get to your house :(.

tru - Good luck with 'that tree' - what a shame about the guy who's drill slipped and he spilled the creosote ......................... how could such a thing possibly happen ;) :rotfl:. I know that 'technically' you're supposed to chuck any 'tree trimmings' back into the garden of the person who owns the tree, but I doubt if they'd be wanting to get rid of them - good idea to use them in the chicken run and garden. Waste not, want not - very 'oldstyle' ;)!

camelot1001 - great productive saturday for you there :)! Hope you have an equally good Sunday and good luck with the meringues ;).

snoozer - I didn't have a very good relationship with my ex-MiL - I married her youngest of 6 boys, so I got 'her baby'. As I'm the 'eldest of a family of 4', it wasn't a very good idea to marry 'the youngest of a family' :(. I've got 2 DiL's - one is brilliant and I love her to bits. She's the best thing that ever happened to my DS2 - totally turned him around and I'm forever grateful to her. My other DiL is 'ok', but there's lots of things that I find completely irritating about her - especially her obsession with illness/doctors/hospitals, to the extent of sitting in A&E and taking photos of drips/cannulas etc, posting them to Facebook every time that she visits hospital (at least once a month ). Oh well, for some reason, she makes DS1 happy (at least, I think she does) and it's HIS life/relationship.

((((Healing Hugs)))) for all who need them, especially TA, Holly, Polly, taff, Hester's CHS and all others who are battling health issues or caring for those with them. Bless You all :).

I've got 'Minced Beef Hotpot' bubbling away gently in the SC right now - so today's meal is taking care of itself :j.

Church this morning and then a lazy afternoon - I've got a shift in the Charity Shop tomorrow afternoon, so it's a good excuse to 'conserve energy' ;):p.

Have a good 'oldstyle' day, everybody and take care - luv Ollie xx

Good morning folks.

Cold, wet and grey here. Just the day to crack on with things like reading in front of a roaring fire. :j

There's a washing load to get going, it'll all have to hang on the spare bedroom with the dehumidifier going.

I've been listening to short podcasts about classic Scottish albums and got engrossed with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band stuff. That took me roaming around the internet for an hour. :o

My thoughts to all those in pain or sad. The light will come back - I keep telling myself this!

Happy Sunday to everyone.

Good morning all
The sun is shining again :j. Unfortunately the trees are shedding their leaves at a rate of knots :(
Nothing much going on at chez nan today, except the usual Sunday lunch with Dad. I'll get Mr Fix It hoovering the downstairs as I prep the veg ( can't let him sit idle while I work now can I :D )
The lunch menu today includes roast chicken, roasties, honey roast carrots and cauliflower, all covered in gravy mmmmmmmmmm ! Tea will be corned beef toasties followed by HM blackberry and apple crumble with custard. ( This is the only day I won't worry too much about the diet )
Hope everyone has a good Sunday and hugs to all.
nan xx
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently
• Good morning, and it's a fine mild- ish breezy one here.
Thanks SO for starting. I suffer from the same syndrome, as soon as i put the light out I'm wide awake. My Dh sleeps as soon as he puts out his light, hardly moves all night, and is disgruntled on the rare occasion that he has to get up in the early hours to go the toilet.

Poppy, I was sad to read your post yesterday, and have thought about you a lot. Cancer treatment can be brutal. I think someone yesterday suggested the Maggie's centre - is there one near you,if there is could you get to it? There was a Maggie's at the hospital in Newcastle where I had radiotherapy.

Camelot, I'm going to be rude here and say that parsnip pilaf sounds awful - mind, I don't like parsnips in any form.

Olliebeak, I was interested in your comments about in-laws.
My MIL died 2 years after we were married but she was a nice lady, if a bit old fashioned. She was a woman of her times.

I have 2 Dils, and my daughter's partner is practically a Sil. I think he is a bit strange at times, but my daughter seems happy, and as you say, it's their lives.
My Dils are nice girls, tho one of them is on the other side of the world, so obviously don't see her often. I have a good relationship with my other Dil, but I'm careful what I say and try not to make waves.

We have a few jobs to do today, and I've got a load in the Wm, it'll dry I think.

Thoughts to the sad and poorly people - Poppy (try and keep posting), Hester's
' OH, and TA and her family.

Take care folks
• Good morning, thank you for starting the thread silver-oldie.

Crisp and quite cold here, brilliant blue sky!

Not a great deal happening here at present, might go out later. I'm cooking today, chicken in white wine, garlic parsley and lemon with baked potatoes and green veg.

Am currently sitting about reading the Sunday Times, must energise myself.

Thinking if TA, ~taff, Poppy, Holly and anyone els needing a bit of extra virtual support.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
