Switching to HSBC and opening an overseas HSBC account

Hi
I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I am moving to Canada in January as I have been offered a job. I want to switch from my Natwest account to HSBC before I go because I know if you are a HSBC Customer you can open an international bank account. Would anyone know whether I could open a HSBC current account and HSBC international account at the same time? (i.e. could I walk into HSBC and open both)
I want to be able to access my UK account overseas and easily make transfer efficiently.
Thanks
Jen

Start the switch now( HSBC are notoriously slow and picky)

and then look to open an account in Canada?

slow and picky - well - they accepted me automatically by identifying me with the electoral roll.
nevertheless, if you go for the expat account. check if you are eligble firstRelationship Balance
Your Relationship Balance is the total amount of deposits and investments in your HSBC Expat accounts.
New customers
To become a customer of HSBC Expat you need to keep a minimum amount of £60,000 or currency equivalent in your HSBC Expat accounts and investments.
All customers must be aged 18 or over.
Your Relationship Balance is the total average credit balance, calculated every calendar month, of all your HSBC Expat accounts and any investments you have with HSBC Bank Nominee (Jersey) Limited - as long as they're all in the same name(s).0 -

And the OP may be similarly fortunate - I myself have had no trouble with HSBC.
But there have been numerous posters who have found the HSBC experience (and the M&S and FD experience) somewhat tortuous.
I have had a FD account for a number of years - no trouble opening - and a M&S account for a couple of years no problem, just slow.
For this reason I suggested that the OP should make a start on switching sooner rather than later - she can do without hassle just as she is about to wing her way to foreign parts?0 -
Wouldn’t bother with hsbc at all.
You’d be fine having a Barclays account for U.K. monies which you can access and service overseas, and then open an account when you get to Canada with a local bank. Good luck I wish to move to Canada at some point, just got to find a woman who wants to marry me who has Canadian citizenship, but other than that - all the best.0 -
HSBC we’re picky for me. My application resulted in having to go to a branch for a 90 minute appointment. There were so many questions to go through and I was initially turned down on income even though I comfortably earn enough to cover the minimum pay in.
Fortunately I also bank with FD and that’s where my salary was deposited at that time so they were able to verify that part and I was accepted.
My point is that if you do go through with applying for an HSBC account do allow plenty of time to get the process done.0 -
Between the UK and Canada, there isn't much reason to use HSBC. If you need to move money between the two countries just use a specialist international money transfer company.
HSBC is more useful when one of the countries involved is in Asia.0
