Thanks again every one. Part of our problem is we are some distance away and will be asking the vendor to allow a builder in to have a look whilst we are not there so difficult to measure them up!
will definitely go for the Which trusted traders and look online for local community sites.0 -

We are looking to relocate down to the Devon/Cornwall border. We have seen a property but it does require some work to be done to it beforehand. As we live quite some considerable distance from there, how do we go about finding a decent builder, as obviously we cannot go off recommendations from locals. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.0

I use check a trade and trusted trader then go off reviews. Do not use mybuilder, they charge their tradesman to respond to requests which affects who responds. It is used mainly by people looking to build a business, Obviously everyone has to start somewhere and I have had some excellent younsters do small jobs for me but I wouldn't use it for building work.0

checkatrade and trustd trader are no better than mybuilder. They are all commercial sites dependant on income from.... the builders who advertise there. This does not mean all those advertising on those sites are ubbish, just that being on those sites is no guarantee of anything. Nor really are the reviews.See earlier posts in this thread0
