It would help if you gave some ideas what you need, just a shop window, couple of pages, or shopping baskets, interactive blog etc

As above you probably need to give a bit more information for anyone to give any helpfull sudgestions.

It all depends on what you are trying to do, how professional you want it to look, how technical your skills are.

I would say if you are looking at services like the 1and1 mywebsite type thing, then I'd also get a couple of quotes from local companies for what you need. Helped out someone who was using that a year or so ago and for what they were paying out on it they could've had something much better made for them with no rolling monthly fee, based on the company we used.

Wordpress, it is the most widely used, is totally free, has a add ons for almost every conceivable widget you need and because it is so widely used you can easily find cheap techs if you want custom stuff done.

It is built on industry standard LAMP technology which are open, yet it is very easy to use.

It has millions of templates so you can change the look and feel, some are free and some cost from £25 or so.

There was a time when wordpress was hackable but this was mostly because of free templates that had back doors or sites that were not updated.

Google loves Wordpress too and there are many white hat SEO plugins available.

Avoid the likes of weebly & godaddy or any bespoke hosting solution they are not open systems and you end up stuck with them, while wordpress can be easily moved between hosting providers.

It does not matter what your project is, there is a wordpress solution out there

They do have an online version wordpress.com but wordpress.org is available from your hosting provider.

As with any website the most important thing is the content, use something like MSWord in outline mode to create this, then creating the site will be easier.

    Specifically, WordPress.org - WordPress.com is not free.
