Buying first sofa bed, advice needed

  • I moved into my flat last year . I took my old leather settees( 1 three seater &1 two seater )with me. I have had many people crash over on my 3 seater many times over the years. They are 20 years old now
No complaints . They slept well.

When I moved here , I was wondering what to do for he best ,regarding the smaller flat I now have . I decided to stick with what I have, but .. got an inflatable airmax from Qvc . Cost about £179.00 iirc. Look on qvc website/ you tube and see.
My 2 sisters stayed with me on 2 occasions now, ( 1 on the airmmax / 1 on the 3 seater settee) and both were happy .

However, I did look at a website recently ( oldbootsofas.com) that cater for sofabeds. You may find something within your budget.

I was going to buy new furniture, but decided to keep what I have ,as I do wonder if things are made as good as 20 years ago.
    Probably paranoia :)

    Hope this helps.

We recently had a dilemma between sofas from sofa.com and Ikea. The ones we wanted from sofa.com were 4x more than Ikea. Went and tried them both out and there wasn't a massive amount of discernible difference in comfort.

Overall we went for Ikea, still had a 10yr frame guarantee (I think sofa.com had lifetime) but there was the consideration of being able to change / wash the covers if absolutely necessary, having a cat, and had someone spilt something on £4K worth of sofas I'd have gone apoplectic. In additional, in 10yrs time, if we want to change them, it's not going to be as massive a deal based on what we paid for them.

As Fire Fox says, Ikea successfully sell vast qtys of furniture globally every year, I watched Flatpack Empire and the testing they do on furniture is surprising. It took two of us well under 2hrs to assemble 2 sofas and much of that time was moving bits around the room to get the packaging out.

No matter what you choose in the end, I would ensure it is comfortable to use as a sofa first and foremost, because it's you paying for it, you will be using it 90% of the time to sit on.

We bought futon sofas from here years ago and we're happy with our purchases. They are still going strong.

Have you looked at Nabru? You can choose from various elements to design a sofa to fit your home and they will build it for you too. There is a wide choice of covers.
I have a Nabru sofa which is comfy and my mum has one plus a sofa bed which she is very happy with.
  • Do you have loft space? We got this sofa futon thing from eBay (like £60) it folds into a small futon which we just stick in the spare bedroom. Everyone who slept on it said it was amazing. Try that cos for your main sofa you need it to be comfy and strong. I made a mistake and spent 2.2k on a sofa which I hated cos it wasn't comfy at all. My advice try before you buy!

I had IKEA L Shape sofabed for 4 years. The bed is excellent and really comfy, but the sofa bit is very bad for back support, I ended up having some back pain and had to buy another chair. I have just bought a property and we are going to good ergonomic sofa and air bed option. Double layer airbed is actually very comfy and sturdy.

The thing with the sofa part is that it can be tweaked.
A memory foam cover on top of it is necessary and I was even thinking of adding one on that expensive option.
Now.. With that in mind, I can always tweak the sofa bed but need a comfy sofa and that I can't possibly tweak.
I am considering click clack or ikea type sofa beds as well as nabru. Thanks for recommendation. They only use 6cm of foam mattress and only 180cm in length but then again.. Only £550 max. Another issue is the space on the sofa which appears to be about 174cms. I am 189 and kinda want to crash on it sometimes. With this new flat and being a first time buyer it has been a hard job thinking of purchases and keeping a good balance between price and quality...

Hi Kerri, can you tell me which and which sofas have you compared from sofa dot com and ikea? And eventually which one you went after? Thanks

    good theme
  • I have the Friheten sofa and I like it. It’s an excessive shape when it’s a couch, has the chaise lounge storing space and while it’s drew out to be a bed, it’s a queen size. I can pull the bed shape out without pulling it all the way up and it’s a small footrest. It’s really comfy, on the firm side. I like its low key look and the fact that the chaise can be mounted on both side.
